A hybrid install is best for mixed climates when people have items in their attic that need to be cooler in hot months. In a hybrid install, you are both stapling the foil up and laying it down on top of the insulation on the floor.

In a hybrid method, you might choose to only lay the foil down over the insulation in areas where there is nothing on the floor, like in this photo, but staple it up elsewhere.

This is an area that's perfect for an over insulation method because of the limited accessibility. You can see the strips of foil overlapped on top of the insulation.

In this attic, the staple up method will keep the heat out of those storage items in hot months. In the remaining areas of the attic without storage, foil is put on the floor, over the insulation or flooring.

Here the customer got the foil down as far as was easy to do and then they will lay a sheet of foil over/on top of the two ducts. This will help keep heat out of those ducts in the hot months and help keep heat in the insulation and ducts in the cold months.

This is an excellent photo of a hybrid install. On the left side of the image you'll notice the foil from the rafters actually hangs down and rests on the foil on the floor. This is ok. As long as there is plenty of air movement around all sides of the install, then you're on the right path.

Go for the big, open rafter areas first and staple the foil up. Then come in and fill in the extra spaces with foil on the floor, over the insulation and/or flooring.

If you imagine looking down on this attic from a birds eye view, you'd see that they got full coverage by doing a hybrid install. They probably could have easily just gone with a staple up; however, now they stand to help keep heat IN during the cold months of the year too!

Notice the long runs of ducting running the length of the attic just off the floor platform. The foil was gently placed over it, not wrapped tightly on the ducting. This is how you address ducts in the attic - lay the foil like a blanket over them and allow for there to be some air between the foil and the duct.

In a mixed climate where the HVAC is in the attic, doing a hybrid install keeps the HVAC in a cooler environment in summer and it keeps the the insulation warmer in the winter. This is the best choice for year-round results.

Note the numerous triangular shaped holes cut out all along the supports for proper air flow around the foil. Good job!

This is an area over just one room. In an attic this large, radiant barrier payback is HUGE!
